The department has issued this notification to advise that from 1 November 2025 the following Australian Design Rules (ADRs) will become applicable. Euro 6 emission engine and high standard EV battery will be required on the approval vehicles.

Applicability Summary for ADR 80/04
ADR 80/04 – Emission Control for Heavy Vehicles will apply to all MA, MB, MC and MD category vehicles with a gross vehicle mass(GVM) greater than 3,500kg and all ME, NB, and NC category vehicles.
Applicability Summary for ADR 109/00
ADR 109/00 – Electric Power Train Safety Requirements will apply to all MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, NA, NB and NC category vehicles with a maximum design speed of 25km/hr or greater if fitted with an electric power train and a rechargeable electrical energy storage system.
What impact will the new regulations have
On this date, any vehicle type approval that covers a type of road vehicle that falls into one of the above listed categories will be subject to an automatic suspension if the department has not already, as part of the application assessment process:
- Assessed that the vehicle type (and any variants) covered by the approval meets the requirements specified within the above-mentioned ADRs; or
- Determined that the requirements of the above-mentioned ADRs are not applicable to a type of vehicle (and variants) covered by the approval.
The process for applying to extend an approval is available as early your time as possible.
Important advice about the extent of compliance of the current VTAs
If you like to extend your vehicle type approval to address an updated ADR, you will need to review your vehicle specifications, which are compliance with the new updated ADRs. if not, you will need to upgrade your vehicle with new components or system to meet the new ADRs . a few ADR tests will be required after the new version vehicle on a prototype.
